The other night my golden retriever went running out the door growling at something near the house. A few minutes later, I could smell skunk. I thought, “Oh great!” Fortunately, the spray did not hit my dog directly.

The next evening my husband and I were talking, and I saw the skunk making its way up the front yard in broad daylight. It made a direct path to our back door before making its way into the woods.

Animals are teachers too. We can learn something about our lives by exploring the essence and characteristics of the animal that is bestowing their presence upon us. A good book like Animal-Speak by Ted Andrews can help with the exploring the symbolic meaning.

Here is what Andrews had to say about skunks. “The skunk does not get out of the way of any animal. It moves along at its own speed, with its own mind. It is self-assured and confident in itself. If skunk has shown up, it can be to help you with this particular aspect. It can teach you how to be more self-assured and how to assert yourself.”

The interesting part is that this does reflect for me the parts of my psyche that I’m working on right now.
